Questions Related to Remote Learning

Remote learning allows the Dr. Maya Angelou Community High School to extend learning into the home and keep everyone safe during emergency closures. Remote Learning is learning utilizing electronic technologies to access specific educational curricula outside of a traditional classroom for 9-12. Lessons and assignments will be provided to each student.

What can I do to to make sure your child is successful with their remote learning?

Our number one goal with Remote Learning is to make sure your child continues to learn and is safe. With a new process, there will be many things your child/children can share about their learning and demonstrate success. There will also be opportunities for improvement as we become more familiar with our online learning procedure.

How long do children have to complete assignments on remote learning?

* Students are expected to complete the lesson(s) assigned by their teachers on a daily basis.

* Online Learning days are about extending learning outside of the school building and not stopping instruction.

Teachers will enter grades into Schoology.

* Students will have FIVE school days to complete any make up work after the work is assigned.

Dr. Maya Angelou Community High School

Welcome to Dr. Maya Angelou Community High School

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I hope you enjoyed a well-deserved summer respite with your children. It is an honor to continue to serve this community for a fourth year as principal. I am honored to have the opportunity to lead this school in the community that I was born and raised! I will continue to work passionately to serve this community. Everyday I am thankful for the food and shelter I have. This is due to our students, parents and community members. Our students and community need us and we need you. We are here to serve the needs of our community. We will continue to work diligently and love our students. We will continue to work with passion, compassion and empathy!

The staff worked diligently to prepare for this transformative year for our school. We are focused on coherently implementing school initiatives and goals, and applying and measuring expectations for our school community. Our vision and professional learning goals are based the LAUSD Strategic Plan, Local District Central’s academic foci and the mission/vision of our school. The LAUSD Strategic Plan outlines the following priorities:

  • 100% Graduation
  • Proficiency For All
  • 100% Attendance
  • Parent Community and Student Engagement
  • School Safety

The vision of Dr. Maya Angelou Community High School is to nurture an environment that empowers all students to develop into innovative learners and leaders, through the perspective of social justice, in their own lives and in their community. The vision embodies LAUSD Strategic Plan and our district’s academic foci. This year’s initiatives were instrumental in our school receiving a six-year accreditation during the WASC.

Along with the teachers and staff, I will work hard to continue our personalized focus of success established by building strong relationships with parents, students and our community.  We will continue to focus on character, academic skills and learning, the use of data to drive instruction, and to provide consistent implementation of the curriculum in a rigorous manner so that we can continue to increase all of the students' achievement. This year is going to be amazing as we continue to provide academic experiences for our students that are rigorous, relevant, impactful, and help them build positive and impactful relationships while making real-world connections. All of us at Dr. Maya Angelou Community High School are eager and excited to begin what promises to be the best year ever.

I look forward to working with you as a team to help each student meet their goals and have a successful school year! I welcome your involvement as we work to provide the best possible education for all our students.  As the principal, it is important to me that everyone who steps through our doors is excited to be here! This attitude enables us to meet the challenges of academic excellence in a positive, fun, and nurturing environment.  My door is always open and your input is welcome. I encourage you to contact me with your ideas, suggestions and concerns. Please feel free to visit, call or email me to discuss any concern, question or comments you might have throughout the school year. I look forward to the return of our student on August 20, 2019!

Respectfully,

Hugo Carlos, Principal
